Virginia Tech Athletic Director Whit Babcock has been named Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).

Each year, according to the NACDA web site, the NACDA names four "Athletic Director of the Year" winners in each of seven divisions (NCAA FBS, FCS, Division I-AAA, II, III, NAIA/Other Four-Year Institutions and Junior/Community Colleges), for a total number of 28 winners.
Whit Babcock is one of four FBS winners of the award for 2017-18. Barry Alvarez (Wisconsin), Joe Castiglione (Oklahoma) and Kirby Hocutt (Texas Tech) were the other winners.
Babcock is the second Virginia Tech AD to win the award. Former Hokies AD Jim Weaver won the award in 2013-14. Weaver retired on December 31, 2013, and Babcock's hire was announced on January 24, 2014. Weaver passed away in July 2015.
Babcock has overseen a number of coaching hires at Virginia Tech, including coaching hires in all three major sports -- football (Justin Fuente), men's basketball (Buzz Williams), and baseball (John Szefc) -- as well as wrestling (Tony Robie), women's basketball (Kenny Brooks), softball (Pete D'Amour), lacrosse (John Sung), volleyball (Jill Wilson), and swimming and diving (Sergio Lopez Miro). He has also updated and expanded Virginia Tech's baseball stadium and launched Olympic Sports facilities projects, and has also announced a new Student-Athlete Performance Center project.
