Virginia Tech has added Mark Diethorn to the football staff as Director of Player Personnel. Diethorn replaces Chuck Cantor, who departed for a similar job at the University of Florida.
Diethorn is a 2007 Virginia Tech graduate in Business Information Technology. He earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Management from Florida, and an MBA from Pitt. A Pittsburg native, Diethorn has been working on the Pitt recruiting staff since 2012, with his most recent title being “Director of Recruiting.”
With Diethorn working as Director of Recruiting, the Panthers signed their best recruiting class in the last eight years, according to rankings by Rivals and ESPN. While serving as Director of Recruiting at Pitt, he was “responsible for planning and executing all prospect visits, as well as planning and executing all aspects of Pitt’s recruiting and personnel strategy,” according to the Virginia Tech press release.
“Mark will serve in a key role for us as our director of player personnel,” Justin Fuente said in the press release. “His longstanding relationships with coaches across our region and his passion for Virginia Tech are just some of the qualities that made him the right person for us. Mark is very bright and talented, but it also became very apparent he shares a vision for the type of young men who will fit at Virginia Tech, in terms of work ethic, talent and their commitment to being successful academically. We’re excited to have him join our team and what we’re building in Blacksburg.”
Before landing at Pitt, Diethorn worked on the recruiting staff at Florida in 2009 and 2010 under Urban Meyer. At Florida, he “assisted the Gators’ coaching staff during recruiting periods and handling campus visits, in addition to managing Florida’s recruiting database.” He also has experience in the private sector, working as a business analyst for PNC Financial Group.
