I finally found some closure with this video from a fan who had the perfect angle in the southeast stands: https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1EgiQwwYUN/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Dear god, people. Move on.
We missed the FG.
That is why they have a guy standing DIRECTLY under the goal post.
Maybe next year they should have officials standing on the 30 yard line (because apparently it's a better angle!) - sarcasm

Franklin needs to contact Bruce Arians and have him tell the story about the end of the 1974 UVA game. Tech scored a TD in the last minute of the game, trailing 28-21. At 28-27, Jimmy Sharp went for two; Bruce ran a QB option out of the wishbone. He was hit short of the goal but stretched the ball over for the win, according to one official. But another official saw it differently and overruled the call. I think a photo showed one official with hands raised and another with hands crossed.
cybburghokie
Friend told me he'd seen Arians on our sidelines of the Pitt game.

Great picture of Brown and Luke. Look at Brown's skinny arms. He's a high school kid taking on a linebacker. With all the TEs we have, why does Howle scheme a lightweight two yards short of the line to gain? Why does Mines have him in the game for that play? The LB flat out stole it from Brown. It was like a man playing with a boy. We've thrown that same pass short 3 or 4 times in the last couple of games. If don't to waste that route on Luke, Gosnell or Hairston would be a better option. The LB wouldn't go over their shoulders and toss them around like a rag doll. Another thing Mines could do is teach them to pivot a yard or two past the line to gain instead of short of the line,

We know about his record against top teams … how about his home record against evenly matched teams where the line was within 3.5 or so either way? An article diving into those numbers would be interesting. My limited research on it informed my Pitt pick … although way off on the final score.

This loss was not due to coaching
IB4TECH
The argument of CJF not winning the close one or the big one is so ridiculous.
syee74vt96
Run the numbers with your favorite AI model … Franklin’s record on games where the line is 3.5 (either way). The results are interesting.

The dude just got here. Who does VT think they are? The comments by unappreciative fans are absurd. Franklin will brink top level players to the program, build a competitive culture and staff. All while winning a **** ton of games. Doing things the right way like Frank. Give him a break please!!!

Hate the loss but appreciate the team kept plugging along. To be inches from a win with 4 turnovers and multiple drive extending penalties was a huge accomplishment.
I still don't know if the field goal was good or not but please change the rules to at least review the camera angles. If nothing definitive to overturn it then so be it.
mcannaday
Good take. Turnovers lost the game. Felt like Brent should have brought more pressure. We needed turnovers and did not get them
HOKIE SEAN
A safety is kinda like a turnover. The D played their butts off after being put in some terrible spots.
HOKIEFROY
The official on the right side thought it was good. He kept looking to the other official and then waved his arms.

I could have sworn in years past there were cameras on each upright. Maybe it was some kind of experiment that never went into practice?

personal foul penalties drive me nuts. Especially on 3rd and long.

A sloppy game.

Instead of saying a “Hall of Fame Columnist,” just say David Teel. We all know you are talking about that Hokie Hater!

Haven't heard much about the hidden yardage in the punting game that was in Pitt's favor. Don't know the number but it had to be significant.

This is clearly the best team we have fielded in 10+ years. And as much as a loss stings, it has zoomed me back to necessary reasonableness. If we won, I would surely would have expected an 11-1 regular season and a CFP appearance.
Now I think an 8-4 season would be solid and a 9-3 would be remarkable.
This is a really good team. The standard has been elevated in Blacksburg. And while we are really good this year, I think we are only a year or two away from an exceptional team. Proud of our boys’ efforts out there. Go 1-0 next week. GO HOKIES!
namibiahoke
This loss: a true team effort! It certainly can't be pinned exclusively on Love's miss. BUT, boy, we Hokies have much to look forward to in this season.

Since when does a 50-50 pass and catch called interception?
Since when does pass route by Reynolds mugged by defender not called defensive pass interference?
But on same play offensive pass interference called on intended receiver which was fantom?
Then the final FG?
So so many questions.
middletennhokie
Both ESPN announcers were critical of the 50-50 INT call right before half. One said 'a 50/50 ball goes to the offense'.
VT Rockie
The Hokies seem to always find ways to lose. The officials are not the best and we seem to end up on the short end of their calls. Numerous questionable calls last night. We played poorly but the gift of a win was handed to them by the team and yes the officials.
masshokie1
A couple observations from a game with many: 1) though we never want to turn the ball over, all turnovers are not created equal. The last interception set up the safety, ensuing long kickoff return and subsequent TD. 2) this is NOT a criticism of Grunkemeyer but I was thinking after his pass in in the second quarter to Luke Reynolds: "please score a TD on this drive". When we had to settle for a FG, I thought, "please don't let that 4 points be the difference in the game." If the throw had been a bit more on target, Reynolds had no one around him and would have easily scored. That said, Grunkemeyer is the best QB we've had in a LONG time and made some great throws. I was also impressed by his ability to put aside his mistakes and make some excellent throws down the stretch. In a game filled with mistakes, there's definitely reason for optimism.

When a team is clearly settling for a field goal, it seems a good strategy is a play on 3rd down to position the ball in the middle of the field. That kick was very makeable, esp. for Love, but still it was on the hash, which gets tougher for shorter kicks. VT had so many mistakes and things not go their way, it was not a night they were lucky or good enough in large chunks of the game.
North Main Hokie
I would think so, too, but clearly they were putting it into Love‘s preferred position.
tallahasseehokie
Love asked for right hash- he’s a future nfl kicker and knows his angles
IB4TECH
The thing is, Love is a very good kicker and he has his preferences. He simply didn’t execute properly on that one.
wizskier
We showed we have both a good and resilient team. Without the turnovers, this was as a win period.

With Pitt’s QB getting hurt, yes. If he hadn’t gone down when he did it’s hard to say. They had no pass game with the backup QB. We missed a big opportunity in this game.

The VT fans in the end zone reacted like it was GOOD!

Kudos to Luke and Caleb S. They were the only "men" who stepped who volunteered to talk to Mike after the game.

Pitt dropped a number of passes. We were fortunate to have a chance.
Our running and passing game stalled quite a bit after the first two touchdowns.
Oh well. Time to go for a hike today.
George Baylor
Fully agree, up 14-0 we went very conservative on "O." That is when we lost the game. This is not on John Love, it is on the "OC" for not killing PITT early.
hokie77th
I totally agree on the more conservative playcalling after the first 2 tds.
kennedyvt
Four turnovers and Woseley’s PF penalty in the first half are what lost the game. You win and lose as a team in football.

Entertaining game even if VT was on the wrong side of it. The VT catch / takeaway was a a BS interception call.
Something Chris said sticks with me, this is a young but talented team where the youth in the OL and DBs are going to hold them back. One interception and one fumble was entirely from duress on the rush, VT's running game was stuffed for most of the game, and that last Pitt TD was another blown coverage. I'm still excited for the rest of the season, with the offensive talent the games will not be boring.

That backup QB was as played good or better than the original starter.

That story is as old as VT history. A nobody comes off the bench to have a career day on us.

I thought he missed it from the TV angle. But frankly make/miss doesn't really change my feelings much. We didn't deserve to win that game unlike those others you mentioned.
sacramento hokie
Forget the kick just for a minute. Look at all the other “ close calls” that went against us just coincidentally I guess. The INT that wasn’t/ tie goes to the offensive receiver - even the guy we love to joke about - Matt Austin- said it was a bum call and that lead to 7 points for Pitt…an offensive pass interference that wasn’t ( one was legit )…even on the play the Pitt qb got injured one ref said he had the 1st down although he was at least a full yard short - thankfully reviewable … it’s just gets old and you frankly wonder what is “ happening in the background for ref bias”.. oh well still pissed… but maybe somehow this brings the team together and we have a 9-10 win season ..but have to clean up mistakes first
3TechFanz
Yep that play was a 7,10, or 14 point turnaround right there. If properly ruled a completion we prob get at least a fg or possible TD before half there.
StayPositiveVT
It was a mistake to stop trying to advance the ball once we got to the 20 yard line with 30 seconds left. Maybe in the NFL a 38 yard FG is considered a chip shot, but not in college, even if John Love is your kicker.
hokiepro
We didn’t “stop trying” our run plays were stuffed. Although I’d have had Overton in there instead of Hawkins with a better chance to break loose for the TD
StayPositiveVT
We ran at least two plays that had no chance of doing anything.

Franklin’s right and it isn’t coach speak, turnovers and penalties. Clean those up and this team is winning a lot this year. Penalties have been hurting us all year. Let’s get it fixed and keep the narrative right. Not talking about a kick that didn’t go in. J Love doesn’t need that boys. Hokie nation, let’s watch this team make some better memories so this one’s not even a footnote! There’s still plenty of chances if the boys lean in and grow from it.
Tim Lewis
Was that good? It was so close i couldn't tell so i can't argue with the call. Which is completely different than Coales touchdown catch (yes it was a catch) and Feltons catch that was overturned after seven minutes of review (yes it was a touchdown). So for me the kick does not belong in the same discussion.
hokiepro
No but the INT that should’ve been a catch gifted Pitt 7 points before halftime AND all the momentum
ToledoHokie
There have been so many last second losses over the years that I expect it, and it’s as if we invent new ways to lose. This time it was a field goal as close as it could be. I knew at halftime we would lose….just not sure how, which is why I stopped watching at halftime. But this time it’s ok. We are clawing our way back to being relevant. We’re not there yet. Next week will tell me a lot about this team. Let’s see if they have any resolve.
hokiepro
The way this team is different IMO is the resilience they’ve shown in 4th qtr comebacks. Two weeks in a row they came back and won and almost (or did) win if not for several inches
jpgerloff
Regardless love Love!
nordstrom72
Sucks, but that far right angle clearly shows it was hooked left. Horrible interception call, but the final call was correct.
HokieinSD
Another hard one to swallow... beaten at home by an opponent with a back up QB on prime time... Grrrrrrr!!!!!
hokiepro
The turnovers are what did it…not the backup QB. Pitt had the better, more disruptive defense. Usually in evenly matched games, the better Defensive team wins. We overcame that to be in position to win it on a kick Love had made 95% of the time in his career (under 40 yds)
