What am I looking at here? Did this fan catch a football in the stands? What's the story? (Jon Fleming)
It’s never a good thing to get too excited after two games against overmatched competition, but Virginia Tech football’s win on Saturday over ODU had a lot to enjoy, even if you resist the temptation to project it forward onto the rest of the schedule.

There were also 4 tackles for the leading tackler(s) in 2009 Boston College [Matt Reidy (2 solo, 2 ast), Nekos Brown (2 solo, 2 ast), Mark Muncey (1 solo, 3 ast), Barquell Rivers (1 solo, 3 ast), Cody Grimm (0 solo, 4 ast)].
Also, the record for tackles in a game is 24 by Randy Cockrell (11 solo, 13 ast) in a loss to West Virginia in 1987. Other instances of more than 20 tackles by the tackle leader in a game are 23 by Scott Hill (1987 Virginia AND Syracuse), 21 by Carter Wiley (1987 East Carolina), 20 by George DelRicco (1995 Cincinnati), and....that's it.

I meant the record for tackles in a game back to 1987. Who knows what happened before then.

And of course, I read down further into the article and all that above was pointed out by Code Puppy and Will. Really could use an edit function for these comments.

(Except maybe Vince Hall. Vince Hall looks up to no one.)
Vince Hall looks up to Xavier Adibi. Hall, IIRC, was 6'0", and Adibi was 6'3".
;^)

1997 Gator Bowl? What 1997 Gator Bowl? I don't know what you are talking about... I remember being in Savannah New Year's Eve, then driving back from Jacksonville about 5pm the next day... Never happened

In response to the ODU QB and WRs circus throws and catches, has anyone reviewed the first of the 2 back to back catches by the same WR, the 2nd of which was reviewed by replay? I don't believe the first was actually a catch although it was not reviewed. The ball was bobbled after the WR's foot came down in bounds. Perhaps Brandon can look at this in his review.

My brush with greatness: I played Little League baseball and Jr. High football with Scott Hill back in the day. Really nice guy. He was always a big and athletic kid - me, I was athletic, but not very big. On OL, he played Center, I was one of the guards. If I had been across the line from him on another team, he would have absolutely trucked me. Good to see his name pop up in these articles.

One particular play Grunk threw a swing pass into the right flat. It perfectly led the back out of the backfield, he didn't have to wait on it. By leading him, he was able to get past two ODU defenders. If he'd had to wait it would have been lost yardage with ODU's speed. We all appreciate what Drones sacrificed for the team, but he never could throw with that level of accuracy or savvy.

Love the links Will!

Old school football includes running the ball. That facet of the game is concerning and I’m hopeful we figure out something quickly.
