James Franklin seems to have Virginia Tech moving in the right direction. (Ivan Morozov)
The players are ready, the LED lights are primed and even the sound system in Lane Stadium is finely tuned. (We reporters should know. They were blaring songs during coach and player interviews on Wednesday night. Matt Moore practically had walk-up music.)

if we actually throw the ball well and into the middle of the field, then I have hope for the run game.

Agree on the record, but after watching some actual games, I think I would flip your Pitt and GT predictions, and I think UVa game is a toss up. Those 3 games plus Cal will determine how much progress has been made.

We play The U tight most years and that's my upset pick for 2026!
Let's Go Hokies

I’ve said 7-5, but 8-4 seems achievable. I will wait and see with Pitt and Cal. We owe Cal after the
Hokies got screwed last year. Wouldn’t it be amazing to take down Clemson at their house? Oh a girl can dream right? Can’t wait until tomorrow! It’s been a long off season!

I think 7-5 is reasonable. BTW did anyone see Pop Watson lead UMass to victory over Rutgers?
middletennhokie
He looked pretty darn good
VicDrit
7-5 is fair and reasonable. Somehow, I think we beat Clemson. Grunk has done it before.
mwills98
This team will start 7-0. There will be no mercy from Franklin. He will stay on the gas until the whistles blow. Fans jumping back on the bandwagon. Then we come crashing back down to earth with back to back loses at Clem and SMU. Beat Stanford, lose a tough one to the U and then stomp the Hoos to put the finishing touches on a 9-3 campaign. We’re back but not quite all the way. Putting everyone on notice for 2027 and beyond.

I envy you your Hokie-colored glasses. We can all dream.
SarahVTHokie24
Seems legit. I see Pitt as a toss up. Guess we'll see by the time we get there

10-2

Andy, your takes and picks are well reasoned. I concur, and will be thrilled if the team goes 8+ wins. I also agree with your Ethan Grunkemeyer passing yardage number for the season - he’s at least as good as ol’ “Scared money don’t make money” was, LOL!

I see Tech going 2-2 through the middle portion of the schedule Pitt through Clemson. Does that get them to 8 wins? I don’t know, there may be an upset loss some where.
ToledoHokie
If they start off 4-0 they will get 8 wins, anything less is 7-5 or 6-6.
CoachSchoen22
I think the mental makeup of a 4-0 start does not breed a 7-5 year. A 4-0 start gets you to 8.

Franklin's first Penn State team started 4-0 and finished 7-6. His second Penn State team started 5-1 and finished 7-6. 2021 Maryland started 4-0 and went 7-6. Etc, etc... It's very common to feast on a weak early season schedule and then struggle in the meat of conference play.
GoneFishin Hokie
3 and 5 against the back half of that schedule would be pretty good. Beat Pitt and GT at home, plus Stanford means they still have to spring an upset somewhere along the line. 7 & 5 and beat the hoos, I'm cool with year one.
HokieCrazy1994
I would almost be ok with a 6-6 season IF and only IF all the losses are close. A step in the right direction is being competitive in every game and not getting destroyed by anybody.
st_andrew
Ewww, no. 6-6 when we are favored in 9 games right now is bad.
DADEC52
Gotta remember, Andy isn't really what you'd call an optimist. Not at all saying he doesn't have his points after all he's a smart guy! But generally when the math is done, that limb out there will be empty.
BoozVT
I don't see any value in favorites and spreads in preseason. They're just set to get some action/interest when there is none. Game week lines will end up very different. Barring an unexpectedly great season, I don't see VT being favored in 9 games come game kikckoffs. We still get a couple of additional points (vs standard home advantage) for games at Lane that haven't really been earned in a few years, at least.
