Last meeting

Tyler Van Dyke threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns to lead Miami to a 20-14 win in Blacksburg during Brent Pry’s debut season in 2022. The Hurricanes built a 20-0 lead through three quarters before the Hokies got a pair of touchdown runs from Malachi Thomas and Grant Wells in the fourth. Miami ran out the final 3:20, however, to hold on for its fifth victory in the last six games in the series dating back to 2017.

The big picture

Miami did what it usually does in 2023, tantalizing with its talent but underachieving in interesting and unique ways. The pièce de résistance was Cristobal opting not to take a kneeldown to close out a win against Georgia Tech in early October, leading to a fumble, two blown coverages, a prayer of a deep ball and a defeat snatched from the jaws of victory when the Hurricanes were poised to go 5-0.
