William Watson III shows plenty of playmaking ability. (Jon Fleming)
August is nearly here, so I better squeeze in my annual look at Virginia Tech’s high school signees before they start taking the field. We’ll focus on the backfield to start things off. Tech’s brought in two very different quarterbacks, an interesting hybrid player, and two backs who know how to make highlights.

My read on this is that we are trying to improve position wise yearly. Some of these players may make it through to starting roles, while others may not. With our recruiting kicking into a higher gear, some of these will either have to make it early, or portal out at some point. Everyone who saw "Pop" in the spring game can see he has a different feel to his game, but it is major college ready over a long stretch remains to be seen. Coney looks good and could be a complimentary back, or main hauler depending on how he develops. I do believe Wimbush will develop into a good TE/Hybrid back that is very useful in the run game, and Mitchell is a wait and see what you got back. All of these offensive players need a redshirt and add strength and bulk, so it may be a year or two before we know anything concrete about any of them. (I like Wimbush as the diamond in the rough, and "Pop" as a fan favorite.

Agree, but I think Pop is way too small as of now. He needs to be at 200#. Having said that, I could see Drones starting and giving us an Evans feel: can make decent throws all around and be a bruiser if needed. Then sprinkle in some Pop. I don’t think Wells sees the field, he doesn’t have the playmaking ability, just my opinion.

Would wager Wells starts and is much improved. Drones is a project. Hope he blows up and is huge surprise but there is not much of a competition at this point. Odds are good Wells gets dinged at some point and Drones plays so he will get his chances. JMO sorta.

The likely outcome. These are some promising looking freshmen. Because we have QBs and RBs, I think they’re all redshirted.

Wittke might be the sleeper in the class.

Yeah, I live here in GA and Buford is a football factory. So to get one out of there is pretty interesting.

Well, I don't think he had the greatest year. I think he was almost benched at one point but he stepped it up. Like Champs said, Buford is a football factory so failure isn't an option.

If they were really good Georgia would be looking at them probably average players
