For the second time in four years, Tech's first conference game is against the Cardinals (Dec. 30). Since Pat Kelsey took over, Louisville is 51-19 (29-9). Tech lost 85-71 last season in the KFC Yum! Center.
The Hokies' next two games are on the road: at Wake Forest (Jan. 2) and at Notre Dame (Jan. 6). They went 1-2 against the Demon Deacons in 2025-26, including the season-ending loss in the ACC Tournament, but are 9-2 against the Fighting Irish under Mike Young.
Tech returns home to face Boston College (Jan. 9) and SMU (Jan. 16) on consecutive Saturdays, with an open date in between. The Eagles have a new head coach in Luke Murray. Meanwhile, they lost to the Mustangs last year on Boopie Miller's half-court buzzer-beater.
Five of Tech's next seven games are on the road, beginning with a trip to Florida State (Jan. 20). After hosting Miami (Jan. 23), it ventures to Pitt (Jan. 26) — the lone ACC foe it didn't play last year — and Virginia (Jan. 30) for the first of two Commonwealth Clashes. Then Clemson visits the Hokies on Feb. 2. The Hurricanes, Cavaliers and Tigers all made last year's Big Dance.
After its second open date, Tech heads to the West Coast to face Cal (Feb. 10) and Stanford (Feb. 13). It split with them last year, succumbing to a late Cardinal surge while fending off the Golden Bears.
After the cross-country travel, the Hokies finish the regular season with four of their final six contests at home. That gets started vs. NC State on Feb. 17, which has a new coach in Justin Gainey.
They'll travel up to Chestnut Hill for the second meeting with the Eagles (Feb. 20), a place they last won in 2018. Then it's three straight home games, beginning with UVa on Feb. 23. When the Cavaliers visited Cassell Coliseum last season, Tech prevailed 95-85 in triple overtime.
North Carolina, with new head coach Mike Malone and Hokies transfer Neoklis Avdalas, comes to town on Feb. 27. Tech hosts Syracuse and new head coach Gerry McNamara after that on March 3. Then it closes the regular season at Georgia Tech (March 6) against another new head coach in Scott Cross.
The Hokies' two open dates are Wednesday, Jan. 13, and Saturday, Feb. 6.
After the last two ACC Tournaments were in the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., the 2027 edition will be played in Greensboro for the 31st time.
Under the 18-game model, Virginia Tech will play 16 of the other 17 teams once each, along with UVa and one other rotating school twice. It will not play Duke in the regular season this year for the first time since joining the ACC in 2004.
