Clemson guard Butta Johnson has signed with Virginia Tech men's basketball. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports first reported the news on Wednesday afternoon.
As a fourth-year senior with the Tigers in 2025-26, Efrem "Butta" Johnson appeared in all 35 games, starting nine of them. He averaged 6.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game while shooting 38.5 percent (69-for-179) from the field and 35.5 percent (44-for-124) from 3-point range. He scored in double figures in seven games, highlighted by a 15-point outing vs. Georgia Tech.
Johnson spent his first three seasons at UAB. After a rotational role as a freshman in 2022-23, he grew into a starting role as a sophomore and averaged 11.2 points per game. He averaged 8.8 points as a junior before transferring to play for Brad Brownell at Clemson.
The Huntsville, Ala., native has 1,030 points to his name and is a career 34.7 percent 3-point shooter (163-for-470). He has five career 20-point performances.
Is Johnson eligible? At the moment, the answer is no. That could change, though.
In April, he entered the transfer portal seeking an additional year of eligibility. As of Wednesday evening, he had yet to be granted a waiver or named as a plaintiff in a lawsuit seeking an injunction.
However, sources informed Tech Sideline that Johnson will be added as a plaintiff to Dalley v. NCAA in Pickens County, S.C., before Monday's hearing. There are currently 18 student-athletes listed as plaintiffs in that case, including Miami forward Malik Reneau.
Six court cases have resulted in student-athletes obtaining eligibility relief at the trial-court level, but two of those injunctions have been stayed on appeal — including Washington v. NCAA in Tennessee on Wednesday. One additional state-court case was denied preliminary relief.
If Johnson is granted eligibility relief, he would give the Hokies 15 scholarship players for the 2026-27 season. Fifteen is the maximum number of scholarships permitted by the NCAA.
