Virginia Tech and Mike Young added to their transfer portal class on Thursday with a commitment from San Diego State's Miles Heide. Jon Chepkevich of DraftExpress first reported the news.

The center is the second portal pickup of the offseason for the Hokies, joining Oklahoma forward Kuol Atak.

Heide spent three years with the Aztecs, playing in 99 games and accounting for 370 points and 337 rebounds. He started 31 of the team's 32 games this season as they posted a 22-11 (14-6 Mountain West) record.

Heide averaged 5.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a junior. He had five double-figure scoring outings and had five-plus rebounds in 15 contests.

In his time with SDSU, he was 162-for-247 (65.6%) from the field, which included a 68.4 percent clip on 2-point shots (158-for-231). In conference-only games in 2025-26, he paced the Mountain West in 2-point percentage at 66.7 percent (46-for-69). He was 23rd in Ken Pomeroy's offensive rating this year at 118.7 after a 122.7 mark that was ninth in the league last season.

Heide's also an impressive offensive rebounder. He has 157 offensive boards in his career — 65 of which came as a junior — and ranked fifth and eighth in the conference in offensive rebound rate each of the last two seasons, respectively, at 11.1 and 9.8 percent.

According to Bart Torvik, he had a box plus-minus rating of 1.7 this season. He was better on the defensive end (2.4) than the offensive (-0.7), in part because of his shot-blocking ability. He finished with a block percentage of 4.1. In Mountain West games, it was 5.1, good for seventh in the league.

The Hokies are still building out their roster for the 2026-27 season, but it's best to think about Heide in terms of a Christian Gurdak replacement with more experience. Here's how they compare:

• Size: Heide at 6-9, 235; Gurdak at 6-10, 260
• Pts/Reb: Heide at 5.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg; Gurdak at 5.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg
• Min%: Heide at 45.8%; Gurdak at 40.3%
• 2FG%: Heide at 61.5% (No. 207); Gurdak at 63.2% (No. 144)
• OREB%: Heide at 12.9% (No. 90); Gurdak at 14.8% (No. 31)
• BLK%: Heide at 4.1% (No. 274); Gurdak at 2.5%

Heide hails from North Bend, Wash., just east of Seattle. He was a three-star recruit out of Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie, where he was the conference player of the year as a senior, and was 247Sports' No. 3 prospect in the state in the 2023 class.

With Heide's commitment, Virginia Tech now has seven scholarship players for the 2026-27 season. For more information on the Hokies' outlook for next year, click here for Tech Sideline's roster management page.
