Virginia Tech picked up a commitment from Clemson transfer Sherrod Covil on Wednesday night. The safety has one year of eligibility remaining.
Covil was originally a four-star recruit from Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake. 247Sports ranked him as the No. 9 player in the state and the No. 213 overall prospect in the 2022 recruiting class. He chose the Tigers over the Hokies and numerous other programs.
He played 402 snaps during his Clemson career. His high came as a redshirt freshman in 2022 when he was on the field for 158 snaps. However, his playing time steadily decreased as his career moved along, and he was only on the field for 16 snaps after Week 7 in 2024. He missed part of the 2023 season with a torn ACL, which could help explain why his career never seemed to progress after that point.
Covil’s commitment fills a void left by departing safeties Jaylen Jones (graduation) and Mose Phillips (transfer portal). He is Tech’s first transfer portal addition this offseason and puts the Hokies at approximately 73 scholarships for the 2025 season.
